Dave Brubeck Out of Hospital

Jazz great Dave Brubeck recovering at Conn. home
WILTON, Conn. (AP) - Dave Brubeck's son says the jazz pianist and
composer is looking
forward to returning to the road for some shows after being
hospitalized for a viral
infection.
Chris Brubeck says his 88-year-old father is recovering at his Wilton,
Conn., home,
and hopes to be well enough to perform in a few weeks. He was released
from Norwalk
Hospital last week.
Brubeck's illness made him miss a show April 3 at his alma mater, the
University
of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. He was to perform his 1959 album,
"Time Out,"
to honor its 50th anniversary. Brubeck's eldest son, Darius, filled in
for his father.
Brubeck has several shows set for this year, including the Toronto
Jazz Festival
on July 1.

Diana Krall Releases New CD

I can hardly believe it that the Wichita Eagle actually allowed some of their precious ink to cover a jazz artist. Oooooh!

Singer Krall in relaxed mode

By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY

Associated Press

NEW YORK (--) Between a new album, an upcoming tour, producing a
record for
Barbra Streisand, marriage to Elvis Costello and 2-year-old twin
boys, it's
hard to  imagine Diana Krall can relax these days.

But her hectic juggling has led to what the jazz artist calls the
most
blissful time in her life. No longer singularly career-driven,
Krall, at 44,
says she's finally found the elusive balance between personal and
professional.

"I'm just doing better work because I'm more relaxed (--) you
don't have too
much time to obsesses or worry," Krall says during a recent
interview to
promote her just-released CD, the bossa nova-inflected "Quiet
Nights,"
inspired by  stirring performances she did in Brazil a year ago.

"That's why I like this record so much, because it was so easy and
I enjoyed
it so much. It's not my only thing," the Grammy winner says. "I
don't know if
you can have it all ... (but) I think I'm living beyond my wildest
dreams."
Her longtime producer, Tommy LiPuma, sees a newfound confidence and
exuberance
in Krall, not only as a person, but as a performer. While he
credits that
partly to her growing veteran status (--)"There's this overall
thing that
comes with time and experience" (--) he also sees the enormous
impact of her
family.

"I'm sure that her life and how positive it's been and what a
great
relationship (she) and Elvis have (--) and she's got two beautiful
boys (--)
and all of that I think is great," he says.

Though her onstage persona is cool and sultry, the Canadian-born
Krall, who
lives in Vancouver with Costello and their sons, Dexter and Frank,
is warm,
giggly and gregarious as she stretches out in a swanky hotel in New
York
City's lower east side.

She shows off photos of her kids from her phone, talks of date
nights with
Costello, and gushes about President Barack Obama and wife Michelle
after her
performance recently at the White House for a tribute to Stevie
Wonder.

Krall's boys are the focal point now, but she admits to not really
attending
much to her personal life in the early years of her recording
career, when she
was transforming from a promising young jazz singer and pianist to
a crossover
 platinum sensation.

In those days, she remained focused on performing, and also caring
for her
mother, Adella, who was diagnosed with bone cancer, and whose death
in 2002
Krall describes as "the worst thing that ever happened to me."

A year later she found a different kind of love with Costello, but
credits
close friend Elton John with reminding her that the biological
clock was
ticking.

"He says, 'Diana, you're 39 (--) you're going to be 40. You better
start
thinking about having kids,' and I went, 'Right ... .' But usually,
you'd have
a parent, your mom would tell you that," she says.

When children soon followed, "the lights kind of went ... 'Oh, I
feel my
mother back in me." '

Krall took her twins on the road for her 2007 tour, and plans to
do so again
when she starts her "Quiet Nights" tour this spring. She counts
herself among
the blessed working mothers, with two nannies, a sister to pitch in
and an
entire band that has become a second family.

She also gives full credit to the other entertainer in the
household.

"We're equal parents. He's home with them now with Vancouver, and
he looks
after then when I have to go to Washington to play for the
president," she
says, laughing.

Jazz Appreciation Month - Chicago

To mark the centennial of Chicago jazz-musician Benny Goodman, "The
King of Swing,"
the museum will offer a variety of public discussions, tools and music
oriented programs
to highlight the life, times and cultural diplomacy of Goodman and
jazz artists who
performed with him. Goodman is also featured on the 2009 JAM poster,
available free
to the public.
Museum events will also commemorate the impending release of the new
Smithsonian
Folkways Recordings' 110-track boxed set Jazz: The Smithsonian
Anthology. The anthology
and accompanying book with photographs covers the history of jazz from
its birth
to its current place in global music.
The museum launched JAM in 2001 as an annual event that pays tribute
to jazz both
as a historic and living American art form. It has since grown to
include celebrations
in all 50 states and 40 countries. In celebrating JAM, the museum
joins with a diverse
group of organizations, institutions, corporations, associations and
federal agencies
that have provided financial and in-kind support, as well as
organizing programs
and outreach of their own.
"Jazz is a truly American style of music that has played an important
role in our
heritage," said Brent D. Glass, museum director. "Through the
Smithsonian's Jazz
Appreciation Month activities, we will highlight jazz and its history
and how the
genre has an important function in global diplomacy."
The Smithsonian operates the world's most comprehensive set of jazz
programs and
the National Museum of American History is home to jazz collections
that include
100,000 pages of Duke Ellington's unpublished music and such objects
as Ella Fitzgerald's
famous red dress, Dizzy Gillespie's angled trumpet, John Coltrane's A
Love Supreme
manuscript and Goodman's clarinet. The museum has reopened after a
two-year renovation.

Capital Jazz Fest and more

17th Annual Capital Jazz Festival - June 5-7 - Merriweather Post
Pavilion - Columbia, MD
Washington / Baltimore's Premier Contemporary Jazz & Soul Event
features first-time
headliner Natalie Cole, the reunion of ALL FOUR original En Vogue
members, S.M.V.
featuring Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, & Victor Wooten and the debut
of a fetching
all-star threesome: Maysa, N'Dea Davenport and Caron Wheeler - "The
Underground Divas!"
Once again it's time to mark your calendars for the 17th Annual
Capital Jazz Fest
being held the weekend of June 5-7, 2009 in the lovely wooded setting
of Merriweather
Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. A thrilling line-up of vibrant
contemporary
jazz and R&B is coming on two big stages where music magic will most
certainly mesmerize.
The Pavilion Jazz Stage will be graced by superstars known for great
playing AND
performing. Natalie Cole will make her eagerly anticipated festival
debut along with
returning stars George Duke, Al Jarreau, S.M.V. featuring Stanley
Clarke, Marcus
Miller, & Victor Wooten, Lalah Hathaway, Fourplay, Norman Brown, Roy
Ayers, Will
Downing, Kirk Whalum, Pieces of A Dream with special guest Phil Perry,
Guitars &
Saxes (f/ Jeff Lorber, Euge Groove, Jeff Golub and lady saxophone
newcomer Jessy
J), Regina Belle, Marion Meadows and trumpeter Joey Sommerville.
Meanwhile on The Soul Stage at Symphony Woods (a.k.a. "The Party
Stage"), R&B lovers
will be treated to the 20th anniversary reunion of all four original
members of En
Vogue (Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron, Maxine Jones and the returning Dawn
Robinson),
as well as a new all-star trio of soulful Underground Divas (Maysa of
Incognito,
N'Dea Davenport of The Brand New Heavies and Caron Wheeler from the
original Soul
II Soul). Also sprinkling the smooth R&B flavor will be Peabo Bryson,
Angie Stone,
Rahsaan Patterson, Leela James, Gary Taylor, Raheem DeVaughn, Anthony
David & Mike
Phillips, singer/saxophonist Pete Belasco, English duo Swing Out
Sister and Atlanta
duo Daysahead.
Founded in 1993 by producer and promoter Cliff Hunte, Capital Jazz
Fest swiftly became
the most anticipated annual music event for Jazz and R&B lovers thanks
to its relaxing
idyllic setting, people-watching, art, delicious food, crafts, and of
course, all
the great live music with artists you often get to meet and talk to
during informal
Q&A sessions. Hunte states, "I've visited festivals all over the world
asking music
fans what they love to experience in an outdoor festival setting.
Every year we raise
the bar of our event.and this one is no exception."
One very special component of the festival is the "Capital Jazz
Challenge" held at
the Hilton Columbia Hotel, which gives an aspiring contemporary jazz
instrumentalist
the opportunity to win $5,000 and perform at the Capital Jazz Fest.
"It's our jazz
version of 'American Idol,'" Hunte explains. "We started the
competition in 2004
as a way to give exposure to deserving, up-and-coming talents. This is
especially
important now that there are so few jazz stations to expose new
artists. Applicants
from all over the country send us a video of themselves performing
live. The chosen
six then fly here to be judged by our panel of respected
representatives from the
music community. The winner will perform on the festival's main stage
as the opening
act on Sunday, June 7th accompanied by Washington D.C. jazz band Phaze
II (which
won this competition in 2005). The artist gets exposure and the
audience gets to
catch a rising star."
Capital Jazz Fest has become such an integral component of the
Mid-Atlantic jazz
community that it has spawned two major spin-offs. The first is the
Capital Jazz
SuperCruise, now enjoying its third year in partnership with Royal
Caribbean International.
On-deck for "SuperCruise III" - a seven day, full-ship charter jazz
cruise from Baltimore
to the Bahamas, October 10-17, 2009 - are David Sanborn, Jonathan
Butler, Brian Culbertson,
Hidden Beach Unwrapped Band, Candy Dulfer, Joe Sample, Rick Braun,
Patti Austin,
Najee, War, special jam sessions hosted by Mike Phillips, special
guest comedian
A.J. Jamal, special guest DJ Spinderella, plus even more to be
announced!
The second exciting Capital Jazz Fest spin-off is Capital Jazz Radio
(www.capitaljazz.com/radio),
kicking out kinetically stimulating "Jazz That Rocks.24/7." In
addition to promoting
the participants in the Capital Jazz Fest, SuperCruise and beyond,
this online station
was created to fill the void left by the demise of so many smooth jazz
stations on
the east coast.
Both of these timely new developments are boldly filling voids for
people faced with
ever-fewer outlets for enjoying high quality/ high energy jazz.
Tickets are now on sale for Capital Jazz Fest - "The Woodstock of Jazz
Festivals"
(as described by guitarist Chuck Loeb) and the first great music event
of every east
coast summer - and the Capital Jazz SuperCruise III, "The Jazz
Vacation of a Lifetime!"
Tickets may be purchased on-line at capitaljazz.com, ticketmaster.com
or the Merriweather
Post Pavilion box office.

Free jazz film screening in Wichita, KS

WAMPA Presents New Jazz Documentary in Honor of Jazz Appreciation
Month: 'The Jazz Baroness'

The Wichita Association for the Motion Picture Arts (WAMPA) and
Tallgrass Film Festival will present a special preview screening
of the just completed film, "The Jazz Baroness," in celebration
of Jazz Appreciation Month. As part of Tallgrass Third
Thursdays, this brand new British documentary will screen at 7:30
p.m., Thursday, April 16 at the Warren East Theater, 11611 E.
13th St., in Wichita, Kan.

In honor of the preview status of this screening-one of the very
first in the United States-tickets are FREE of charge for
everyone. Tickets are available at the Warren East box office
starting April 9.
"The Jazz Baroness," directed by Hannah Rothschild, produced by
the BBC and narrated by actor Helen Mirren, documents the
passion of British heiress Baroness Panonnica Rothschild de
Koenigswarter for jazz music and in particular, jazz genius,
Thelonious Monk. The director-great niece of the Baroness-
writes: "In 1951 the beautiful married mother of five left home
and went to New York in search of the man who wrote "Round
Midnight". She found him and this is the extraordinary account
of what happened next. A journey that took her from Harlem to
Hell and back again . Mirren reads Pannonica's words and Sonny
Rollins, Quincy Jones, TS Monk junior, Roy Haynes, Curtis
Fuller, The Duchess of Devonshire and other luminaries tell their
side of the story. This film is the result of a ten year search
to solve the puzzle of Pannonica." And of course, one of the
highlights of the film, is its wonderful soundtrack.

The April screening will mark the third Tallgrass Third Thursday
film event in the 2009 monthly series hosted by Warren Theaters.
Each sponsored screening in the series raises funds for the
Tallgrass Film Festival. Founded in 2003 by the late Timothy
Gruver, the Film Festival is a program of the Wichita

Grant Geissman to release new CD

Grant Geissman to release new CD:
On Cool Man Cool, the stunning follow-up to Say That!, jazz
guitarist Grant Geissman takes you places you might not expect to
go, but the destination is always cool, man, cool. With cool
special guests including Chick Corea, Chuck Mangione, Tom Scott,
Jerry Hahn, Russell Ferrante, Patrice Rushen, and Van Dyke Parks.
Packaged in a custom gatefold Mini LP-style cover, and featuring
artwork by beat/outsider artist Miles Thompson.
'From scorching bebop to Latin jazz romp, from poignant ballad to
jaunty Hot Club of France tribute, with touches of calypso, second
line grooves, shuffle blues, greasy organ-fueled funk and '50s-
styled exotica along the way, Cool Man Cool stands as Grant
Geissman's most eclectic and gratifying outing to date.' - from the
liner notes by Bill Milkowski.
Guitarist/composer Grant Geissman is a noted Hollywood session
player as well as a solo recording artist. Geissman's trademark
over the course of his many solo recordings - from the mainstream
jazz of Good Stuff in 1978 (Concord Jazz) to 1998's acid
jazz/hybrid In With the Out Crowd (Higher Octave) - has been
applying his formidable guitaristic virtuosity to his melodically
strong, signature compositions. Geissman co-wrote the Emmy-
nominated theme (and also co-writes the underscore) for the hit
CBS-TV series Two and a Half Men. As a much in-demand studio
musician, he has recorded with such artists as Quincy Jones, Chuck
Mangione (playing the now-classic guitar solo on the 1978 hit Feels
So Good), Lorraine Feather, Cheryl Bentyne, Van Dyke Parks, Ringo
Starr, Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, Joanna Newsom, Inara George,
Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello. He has also played on the scores
for such TV shows as Monk (playing the Django Reinhardt-style
acoustic guitar solo on the theme) and Dawson's Creek.

Fw: Tony Bennett and Bill Evans

A sublime 2-CD collection that spotlights the iconic song stylist dueting with the
legendary jazz pianist from their two albums recorded in 1975 & 1976.
Disc 1 combines the originally issued recordings, The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album
and Together Again with two bonus tracks.
Disc 2 features alternate takes from both sessions.
Originally produced by Evans manager Helen Keane, the remastered compilations is
produced by Nick Phillips with new liner notes by Will Friedwald.
Inarguably popular music's top song stylist, Tony Bennett joined together with the
legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans for two albums of sublime duets recorded in 1975
and 1976. Venerated as gorgeous gems of jazz grace, the two LPs along with numerous
alternate takes and bonus tracks are combined on the 2-CD The Complete Tony Bennett/Bill
Evans Recordings, released on the Concord Music Group Fantasy Records imprint. Featuring
sessions originally produced by Evans' longtime manager Helen Keane, the new compilation
is produced by Nick Phillips.
Bennett's collaboration with the exquisite pianist is a jazz treat. While the singer
was reluctant to classify himself as an improvisational vocalist, his jazz influences
were abundant. He learned breathing and phrasing by listening to pianist Art Tatum
and got pointers on having a relaxed delivery by studying Mildred Bailey. His vocal
influences included Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra, who later championed him.
While Bennett found favor in the '50s and '60s on Columbia Records with popular hits,
he also had the freedom to stretch in the jazz world, recording albums with the Count
Basie Orchestra, Stan Getz and Zoot Sims, among others. However, with the business
changing in the early '70s, Bennett left Columbia (in 1972) and began recording on
Fantasy Records as well as on his own Improv label.
Originally released in 1975 on Fantasy Records, The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album,
the first meeting of the vocalist and pianist, featured the pair performing standards,
as well as a moving rendition of the pianist's classic tune, "Waltz for Debby" (with
lyrics written by Gene Lees). Other standards include "But Beautiful," "The Days
of Wine and Roses," "Young and Foolish" and "The Touch of Your Lips."
Bennett recalls that the pair didn't even discuss song choices before the session:
"I would name a tune, and Bill would say, 'That's good, let's do that.' We'd find
a key and then the two of us would work it out. For about 45 minutes, we'd work out
the arrangement, he'd say, 'Do you wanna modulate here? How many choruses do you
want?' And then we would play it through and work out all the changes and all that.
We spent three days doing that, until we had nine songs in the can."
The first meeting established the Bennett-Evans chemistry, with the two having plenty
of room to make their own personal statements. The All Music Guide to Jazz comments,
"This is a true duet, with Evans getting considerable solo time." Following the recording,
the pair performed live on a number of occasions, including the Newport Jazz Festival
(in New York) and on television appearances in The Netherlands and Toronto.
In 1976, Bennett and Evans returned to the studio for Together Again for Improv Records
(and later reissued on Concord Records). It's another low-lights, high-improv date
of standards that opens with an Evans solo rendition of "The Bad and the Beautiful"
and continues with such moving renditions of "Lucky to Be Me," "You're Nearer," "You
Don't Know What Love Is," "Lonely Girl," "You Must Believe in Spring" and another
Evans' original, "The Two Lonely People" (with lyrics by Carol Hall).
Both sessions--recorded together, not in isolation booths--yielded several fine alternate
takes that are included on The Complete Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Recordings, as well
as two bonus tracks from the second date, with a superb version of Cole Porter's
"Dream Dancing."
Liner note scribe Will Friedwald, who is the co-author of Bennett's autobiography,
The Good Life (1998, Pocket Books), writes, "It's not merely that the two projects,
The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album and Together Again have entered the curriculum
for jazz pianists and especially singers--something that Bennett, a tireless supporter
of musical education...would keenly appreciate. Rather, to a vast extent, they are
the curriculum."
While pointing out that Bennett had previously recorded voice-piano recordings before
his collaboration with Evans, Friedwald says that this collaboration was greatly
different: "Instead of the singer being accompanied by the pianist, with one in the
spotlight and the other comprising a supporting cast of one, both participants are
equal partners. Indeed, to stress this, Bennett had the idea of opening Together
Again with a piano solo by Evans--so no one would have the false idea that this was
simply a vocal record with piano accompaniment. Indeed, the way that voice and keyboard
interact here seems to have no antecedent in the whole history of jazz; this is more
like an American ideal of lieder."
Reflecting back, Bennett remains especially proud of these sessions with Bill Evans,
citing them as the most satisfying projects of his long career.
