Stevie Wonder Receives Award At White House

Just finishing watching Stevie Wonder receive the Library of congress Award at the White House.  The concert and cerimony were last night and it is running on PBS tonight.

Several performers included: of course, Stevie Wonder, tony Bennett, diana Krall, Martina McBride and several others.

All did most obviously abbreviated tracks.  But the one who disappointed me the most was Tony Bennett.  I'm a big fan of his, but it seemed that he was almost yelling instead of singing.  Really sounded bad.  He must have been eating the microphone as he was pretty distorted as well.

Wynton Marsalis to release new album

On March 24, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, trumpeter and bandleader
Wynton Marsalis
will release his fifth Blue Note recording,
He and She
 – an ambitious new album of 22 tracks that combines spoken word and Wynton's signature
Jazz style.
The album is tempered with flashes of humor and plenty of swing centered around the
compelling and most elemental of subjects, the relationship between a man and a woman.
Before heading into the studio, the Wynton Marsalis Quintet traveled to the Iron
Horse in North Hampton, MA to perform the new material in front of a live audience.
The quintet subsequently cut the tracks live over a two-day period. The minimally
edited result became
He and She.
Marsalis ended his last Blue Note studio album,
From the Plantation to the Penitentiary
, with a stunning spoken word piece, though on He and She
, Marsalis's voice is more prominent throughout, prefacing just about every track
with his poetic words.
He And She is due out March 24th on Blue Note Records.

David Sanborn on The Late Show Tonight

Tonight (February 19th), David Sanborn
 – who is in New York to perform several nights at the famed Blue Note jazz club
– will make a rare live appearance on national television when he is the musical
guest on "
The Late Show With David Letterman."   Sanborn will be joined by vocalist
Sam Moore
, who is on the song "I've Got News For You" on Sanborn's latest CD, "Here and Gone.

Guess I'll have to tape it because I'm not going to sit through that entire boring show just to see Sanborn play one song and then the show ends.

Buffalo Plane Crash: Two Jazz Musicians On Board

Buffalo Plane Crash: Two Jazz Musicians On Board

Two victims of Flight 3407 were members of Jazz musician Chuck Mangione's band. a
local jazz expert says their deaths are a significant loss to the music world.
Two members of Chuck Mangione's band were en route to play a gig with Mangione in
Buffalo when they perished in Thursday  night's crash of Continental Flight 3407. Saxaphonost
Gerry Niewood and guitarist Coleman Mallett were from rochester. Leo Rayhill, a local
Jazz DJ, says, "They formed great jazz in Upstate New York. They were a nucleus."
Leo Rayhill watched Chuck Mangione band perform for years and says their deaths are
a loss to the jazz community. Rayhill says Niewood was a gift musician playing multiple
instruments including the tenor sax, soprano sax and the flute. Mallett was a newer
member of the band. Rayhill says, "There's such a thrill, particularly with the Mangione
group, the improvising was so great."
Throughout his nearly 50 years of Dj'ing, Rayhill has been a longtime follower of
the Chuck Mangione band. The bands popularity hit its peak in the 70's, earning numerous
awards. Tonight, the band is suffering its deepest loss. Rayhill says, "Each one
of those musicians are unique. They have their own way of playing. It's such a tragedy."
Gerry Niewood and Coleman Mallet were scheduled to perform with Chuck Mangiones band
alongside the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

HOLLYWOOD -- Los Angeles-based bandleader-composer-arranger Gordon Goodwin will return to his native Wichita to headline the Friends University 16th Annual Jazz Festival with his 18-piece Big Phat Band. This two-day jazz festival event brings together more than 40 high-school and middle-school jazz ensembles for workshops and concerts, culminating with a headlining performance by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band at 8PM, February 21 at the historic Orpheum Theatre in downtown Wichita.

ABOUT GORDON GOODWIN
Gordon Goodwin & His Big Phat Band have been inspiring musicians and artists young and old to follow their remarkable musicianship for the past eight years, earning Goodwin the tag "Big Band's Pied Piper" for his impact on school curriculums nationwide. Known for his witty, intricate, and hard-swinging compositions, the composer-arranger-bandleader picked up THREE Grammy nominations for his acclaimed new CD/DVD, Act Your Age, with all-star guest shots from producer Lee Ritenour, Chick Corea, Patti Austin, Dave Grusin and, through the wonders of technology, a "virtual" Art Tatum. DownBeat, Jazz Times and Jazziz top the list of great reviews the new CD/DVD package is getting, and the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Time Magazine all have sung Gordon's praises in recent years.

Even for a successful composer and arranger in Hollywood, Gordon's numbers are impressive: A 2006 Grammy Award for his Instrumental Arrangement of "Incredits" from the Pixar film "The Incredibles," three Emmy Awards, and a total of eleven Grammy nominations. 2008's Act Your Age received nods in three categories: Best Large Jazz Ensemble (Act Your Age), Best Instrumental Composition ("Hit The Ground Running"), and Best Instrumental Arrangement ("Yesterdays" Featuring Art Tatum). You can click here to hear this virtual duet with the great Art Tatum, courtesy of the genius pairing of a digitized Tatum recording of "Yesterdays" and Goodwin's insightful big band arrangement, preserving all the razzle-dazzle of the 1949 original.

"Without a doubt the cleanest, sharpest, most disciplined big band going today."
- Wall Street Journal

The 51st Annual GRAMMY Awards Ceremony will be broadcast February 8th on CBS.

Smooth Jazz USA Returns to The Air

Hey smooth people:
To be honest, taking a short break from the show was something I
really needed to do.
but now, I'm itching to get back on the air.
There will be a couple of minor changes in the show. Firstly, we will
be returning to ACB Radio Interactive and again will be on Tuesday's
at 23 hours Universl, which is: 5 p.m. central, 6 p.m. eastern, 4
p.m. mountain and 3 p.m. pacific. that is until the stupid clocks
change in March. However, the show will be two hours long instead of
three. I will continue posting the show archive on the web and all of
the normal features will be back, including: smooth jazz news, lots of
new music, artist interviews and more.
The web page has been updated, so you can use the listen live link
there if you like.
The show on February 3 and the show on February 10, will just feature
great smooth jazz as we rebuild the studio. Full live programming
will begin on the 17th.

Stay Smooth!
