HOLLYWOOD -- Los Angeles-based bandleader-composer-arranger Gordon
Goodwin will return
to his native Wichita to headline the Friends University 16th Annual
Jazz Festival
with his 18-piece Big Phat Band. This two-day jazz festival event
brings together
more than 40 high-school and middle-school jazz ensembles for
workshops and concerts,
culminating with a headlining performance by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat
Band at 8PM,
February 21 at the historic Orpheum Theatre in downtown Wichita.
ABOUT GORDON GOODWIN
Gordon Goodwin & His Big Phat Band
have been inspiring musicians and artists young and old to follow
their remarkable
musicianship for the past eight years, earning Goodwin the tag "Big
Band's Pied Piper"
for his impact on school curriculums nationwide. Known for his witty,
intricate,
and hard-swinging compositions, the composer-arranger-bandleader
picked up
THREE Grammy nominations for his acclaimed new CD/DVD,
Act Your Age
, with all-star guest shots from producer Lee Ritenour, Chick Corea,
Patti Austin,
Dave Grusin
and, through the wonders of technology,
a "virtual" Art Tatum. DownBeat, Jazz Times and Jazziz
top the list of great reviews the new CD/DVD package is getting, and
the
New York Times, Wall Street Journal and
Time Magazine all have sung Gordon's praises in recent years.
Even for a successful composer and arranger in Hollywood, Gordon's
numbers are impressive:
A 2006 Grammy Award for his Instrumental Arrangement of "Incredits"
from the Pixar
film "The Incredibles," three Emmy Awards, and a total of eleven
Grammy nominations.
2008's
Act Your Age
received nods in three categories:
Best Large Jazz Ensemble (Act Your Age), Best Instrumental Composition
("Hit The Ground Running"), and
Best Instrumental Arrangement ("Yesterdays" Featuring Art Tatum). You
can click
here
to hear this virtual duet with the great Art Tatum, courtesy of the
genius pairing
of a digitized Tatum recording of "Yesterdays" and Goodwin's
insightful big band
arrangement, preserving all the razzle-dazzle of the 1949 original.
"Without a doubt the cleanest, sharpest, most disciplined big band
going today."
- Wall Street Journal
The 51st Annual GRAMMY Awards Ceremony will be broadcast February 8th
on CBS.

Peter Cincotti releases new album

Singer-songwriter-pianist Peter Cincotti released
East Of Angel Town this week via Warner Bros.
East Of Angel Town
marks 25-year-old Cincotti's first work of all original material, and explores
musical
styles that blend pop, rock, blues, funk and jazz. Cincotti's percussive piano playing
and rich vocals infuse each song with a startling energy.
The realization of East Of Angel Town
began when Cincotti teamed up with noted producer and 14-time
Grammy winner
 David Foster, producer
Humberto Gatica and producer / sound designer Jochem van der Saag
to create a dynamic sound that is simultaneously classic and modern.
Cincotti has been combining the old and new ever since he burst onto the scene at
the age of 19 when his self-titled debut album – filled with stellar interpretations
of jazz standards – led him to become the
youngest musician ever to claim the top spot on Billboard's Jazz chart
. Following his breakout success,
The New York Times
called him "one of the most promising singer-pianists of the next generation."

Thanks to Blake Aaron I've been introduced to KSBR and they play a
great mix of smooth jazz. Blake even does a show on thursday, 3-6
p.m. Pacific and last week for example, he had Paul Jackson, Jr. as
his guest. Paul played guitar live on the show, they gave away CDs
and talked about upcoming concerts.

Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band

Gordon Goodwin is bringing his Big Phat Band to Wichita for a concert on Saturday, February 21st as part of the 16th annual Friends University Jazz Festival.  The show will be at the historic Orpheum Theatre in downtown Wichita.

Here's some info about the man himself.

We're thrilled to announce that arranger-composer-bandleader
Gordon Goodwin
picked up THREE Grammy nominations for his acclaimed new CD/DVD with his Big Phat
Band,
Act Your Age,
released this fall on immergent Records.
That makes 11 nominations (and one win)
for this exceptional musician since he began recording with the Big Phat Band in
2000.
And he's still not a household name!
The new nominations are:
• Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album - Act Your Age
, Gordon Goodwin
's Big Phat Band
• Best Instrumental Composition - "
Hit The Ground Running,
"
Gordon Goodwin, composer (Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band)
• Best Instrumental Arrangement - "Yesterdays,"
Gordon Goodwin, arranger (Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band Featuring Art Tatum)
All of these categories are familiar turf for Goodwin. This makes the sixth time
in the last eight years he
'
s received the nomination for Best Instrumental Arrangement. During that same span,
he
'
s now been nominated three times in the Best Instrumental Composition category, and
twice for Best Large Jazz Ensemble. Needless to say, this latest batch of nominations
further cements Goodwin
'
s reputation as a superior composer and arranger.
With all of this in mind, we hope you take a moment to check out
Act Your Age, released Sept. 30.

Ultra Jazz Radio Goes Off The Air

I'm sitting here with emotions pulling me both ways. I started Ultra
Jazz Radio in March to share smooth jazz with anybody who loved the
music as much as I do.

Sure, to have several hundred or several thousand listeners would have
been way cool, but I was noth thinking that big.

Since I send out a weekly newsletter to about 150 people, I decided
that if I could get 50 dedicated listeners on a regular basis, the
station would have been a success.

Sadly, we started out with about half of that number, but slowly over
the months, the average listener counts just went down.

My program Smooth Jazz USA started in January 2002 on another stream.
This three hour show featured the best in smooth jazz, smooth jazz
news and lots of new releases.

It became very obvious to me over the months that people must not like
what I am doing as listener counts would even go lower during the live
show.

I first set the end of August as a date to decide whether to keep the
station on the air.

Due to strong encouragement from some loyal listeners, I kept going.

October 31st was my next date. But as that approached, I realized I
had quite a bit of great holiday jazz and there were many new releases
this year. So, selfishly, so I could enjoy my library at work, I
decided to keep the station on the air.

Sadly, today I pulled the plug.

It's just not worth the time and effort for so few people.

Not that those who were listening are not important, they are my
heroes.

I have decided to take January off from doing the Internet show to
give me a chance to recharge my battieries and decide what to do next.

Will Ultra Jazz Radio ever come back?

Maybe, I just don't know right now.

I will continue producing the Smooth Jazz USA Weekend show and it will
be available on my web page for people to check out.

If you listened to Ultra Jazz Radio or my tuesday Smooth Jazz USA
program, thank you so very very much for sharing in the joy of this
great music.

Somebody once asked me how much money I made by doing the show. So
far, not one single red cent. Doing the show was like a hobby for me.
With 3 to 4 hours of prep time each week, plus the live show, it was
really quite a commitment. But I did it because I wanted to and I
totally enjoyed doing the show.

But now, it's time to take a break and we'll see what the future will
bring.

Again, if you listened, thank you so very much. In a way I will miss
running the station, but then on the other hand, it's going to be nice
to have a little extra time to do what I want to do. Another person
had indicated they would be willing to work with me on running the
station and we would work as a team. That never happened and it all
was on my shoulders.

so, for now,we're off the air and if the station returns, I'll post
messages here on the blog.

Smooth Jazz is a struggeling genre right now due to the consultants
that are doing everything they can to get rid of it. If a station is
not playing country, clasic rock or rap, they are worthless in the
eyes of the consultants. These people who have managed to get power
to enfluence what stations play don't have enough radio in their blood
to even understand what it's really all about. so we are seeing
smooth jazz moved to the new HD.2 stations which is fine, but the next
problem is to get the new radios out there so people can here the
stations.

So, let's keep fighting, keep our chins up and do what we can to keep
this great music alive.

Have a great 2009 and stay smooth.
