Other news!
This should bring a smile to your face.
Not music related, but I thought it was just cool and wanted to
share it with you.
A weekend of California Sires Stakes action got underway at Cal-
Expo on Friday night (November 7), on which Smooth Jazz led the way
with her eleventh in-a-row. In the first of three $15,000 events,
all for fillies, this one for three year-old trotters, Smooth Jazz,
who hadn't raced since May 24 and who racing without the use of a
qualifier, would be used a bit from post-six in the field of seven
to obtain the lead just past the opening quarter, timed in :29.4,
all for trainer Tim Maier. Slowing the pace in the second-quarter
while reaching the half-mile pole, timed in 1:01.3, Maier would
pick up the pace a bit with his star pupil on the final-turn while
reaching the three-quarter mile station, timed in 1:31.2. Now being
asked late in the final-turn, Smooth Jazz, in the blink of an eye,
would immediately open up three-lengths at the head of the lane,
and from that point on, there was never a doubt as the Denise Maier
owned young lady, while just under light urging until the final
sixteenth of a mile, would go on to win ($2.60) by 4-3/4-lengths,
in 2:00.2, a seasonal mark. Letter Of Intent (Bruce Clarke)
followed Smooth Jazz, but was no-match while finishing second, and
Sad Parting (Gilbert Herrera) finished another three-quarters of
one-length farther back, in third.

Guitarist, drummer join together for jazz recording
By MATTHEW McGRATH TOMS RIVER BUREAU November 8, 2008
TOMS RIVER It's warmth. It's love. It's attitude.
It's what makes Frankie Cicala a great guitarist and businessman,
according to Bernard "Pretty" Purdie.
"With a good, positive attitude," Purdie said, "you can do
anything." Don't know Purdie? Think again. He's the drummer on
songs recorded by Steely Dan, Aretha Franklin, Issac Hayes, Miles
Davis, Louis Armstrong, Paul Simon and, now, Frankie Cicala.
Don't know Cicala? You will, according to the drummer.
Cicala is the owner of PMI Music on Route 166. He's the Frankie in
"Frankie and the Burn," a smooth jazz duo that has worked the
Jersey Shore for more than a decade. And, he's the Frankie in
"Frankie Plays!" his first album released on Purdie's label, B3
Music and Records.
"A Song for my Dad," is the third track on Frankie Plays! and it is
featured in "Priceless," a film now showing in select locations
starring Purdie and featuring several of his songs. But, Cicala's
song was perfect for a moment in his film, and Purdie said there
was no point to writing another song.
"It's a love song; it's the melody, it's the rhythm, it's the whole
idea you can hear the love in the song." Purdie said of Cicala's
work. "It's emotional, and it does make you think about . . . Wow."
The two men are true friends. They spent more time talking about
the other's work than they spent on themselves. It wasn't too long
ago they crossed paths for the first time. It was during a gig in
Rumson. Cicala played his song for Purdie and Purdie just loved it.
"My association with the world's greatest drummer is something I
would have only dreamed," Cicala said. "To be appreciated by your
peers, that's the measure of a musician it's not how many records
you sell."
The two men sat on folding chairs with their backs to the plate
glass windows in PMI's lobby. They talked about upcoming projects,
such as Purdie's discography and Cicala's second album. They talked
about their music. Purdie will come to PMI soon to teach a master's
drum clinic.
On the walls of the shop were hung guitars, racks of drum sticks
and symbols. A narrow hallway leads to small rehearsal rooms one
with amplifiers, one with a piano, another with an electric drum
set.
"We're already growing out of here," Cicala said, looking around
his shop. The relatively small retail operation supplements a class
schedule with 400 students. Cicala only has professional musicians
give lessons at his shop. But the business of music all comes back
to the playing of music.
"I came to (the guitar) a little later than most, I was 19," Cicala
said. "But, I stick to a pretty regimented routine, I still
practice."
In addition to the music lessons, the gigs and the album, Cicala
has guitar and amplifier sponsorships. Cicala and Purdie are
heading to the National Association of Music Retailers convention
in Anaheim, Calif., in January, where they will play. "There is so
much fun to be had," Purdie said. "If you focus on business,
business, business, your product won't sell."
